Hi All,

I'm fairly new to OSC, but I'm embarking on the journey to make an
open-hardware, modular, expandable console/controller for Ardour (and
eventually maybe more programs). Anyhow, my current idea revolves fairly
heavily around discovery. What is the state of queries in OSC, is there a
standard for this?

Thanks,

Guy.

Hi !

There have been a couple of initiatives in the past, none of which really ended up anywhere
mainly because most of them were a single-person initiative...

There is currently some momentum around https://github.com/mrRay/OSCQueryProposal, which has been discussed by several developers
 So that might worth checking...

Hope this helps

Cheers !

That does look cool. But where was the discussion of this ? I don't recall
seeing anything here on the mailing list.

Anyway I will take a look and see how much work it would be to implement it
in LiVES.

Salsaman.

Oh, OK. It would have been a nice courtesy to have notified people on this
list so that we could have followed the discussion there.

I'm also fairly new to OSC, as the hardware/firmware designer for the Soundplane. Based on observing the behavior of the Soundplane client with Aalto, it seems that software uses Zero Conf (Bonjour) DNS-SD to discover OSC servers.

When Aalto runs, a new Bonjour service appears as "_osc._udp" with the appropriate ip address and a port number of 3123. I'm not really sure what the usual port number range is for other OSC servers, but DNS-SD should make it "easy" to discover the ip and port based on the _osc service name.

Some other products seem to use "_osc._tcp" - which makes sense.

I'm now working on several embedded firmware systems where I need to learn exactly how Zero Conf works. I believe that OSC fits into that quite nicely, but I don't have all the details yet.
